What is an Apostille?

An Apostille is an official certificate issued to authenticate a public document. Under the Hague Convention of 1961, the Apostille simplifies the legalization of documents by allowing them to be recognized internationally in countries that are part of the Apostille Convention.

Public documents such as birth certificates, marriage licenses, court documents, diplomas, and notarial acts need to be authenticated before they can be used in foreign countries. An Apostille certifies that the document has been verified by the appropriate authorities in the country of origin and is therefore valid for use abroad.
